Medo Persian Empire
The Medo – Persian Empire superseded the Babylon Empire in 539 B.C., approximately fifty to sixty years after Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, and Daniel’s interpretation. In my mind after reading and researching all the information, the Medo – Persian Empire was a kingdom with great prophetic value before and during the Intertestament Period. In the book, “How Shall We tell The Children” Chamberlin describes Nebuchadnezzar’s visions as the entire history and age of the gentiles. This is because it has been said that “the four Empires where that of gentile descent.” He goes on to compare the revelations of chapters two and seven as being given to the gentiles to be understood from their perspective and interpretations.” (e.g. Edward Chamberlin) This what I question, If the gentiles where to look at the interpretations from their perspective; did they know that the Medo – Persian Empire was in fact of great prophetic value long before Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, and Daniel’s interpretation? Lets us go back, if the Medo- Persian Empire. It did not rise until some fifty to sixty years after Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, and Daniel’s interpretation, that would mean that the Kingdom had great prophetic value before th
Dan. 5:30-31 says, “That very night Belshazzar, king of the Babylonians, was slain. And Darius the Mede took over the kingdom, at the age of sixty two.” “The Medo- Persian Empire Era is the period of time when the temple was rebuilt, and the law, and walls were restored.” Even though these things came during the Medo- Persian rule it was in the prophecy of the future of Medo- Persia, “that Persia was to remain until the end of time; but it would never receive its former glory.” (e.g. Corinne Bonnet, Paolo Xella) Today the Persian Empire survives as that of Iran. The Persians are the largest and most important group in I ran, claiming approximately fifty percent of the Iranian population. Although often ethnically mixed those who identify themselves as Persians all speak Farsi, and almost all adhere to the Shia sect of Islam. in addition, are seen as possessing a distinct sense of superiority over other Iranians. Persians regard themselves as the true heirs of Iran’s history and traditions and the guardians and perpetrators of its legacies. The fifth “three ribs in its mouth between its teeth.”(Dan. 7) this idol was to represent “perhaps Egypt, Assyria, and Babylon.” (e.g. Williams and Nowlin) I ask why the “ribs” could not represent the gentile empires to come seen in the prophecy if Daniel is looking forward. I offer my opinion of the “ribs” as Greece, and Rome, with the last being that of the “Kingdom of God”. Persia, under Cyrus, defeated the Babylonians in 538 B.C. giving him domination over Mesopotamia, Assyria, Syria and Palestine. The first of the world’s great imperial organizations, the Persian Empire was Beneficent and humane compared with the Assyrian Empire due to its sincerity towards the Jews. The empire cut into provinces and efficient forms of local governments where allowed to remain with language and religion intact. Judah was a minor province of Persia but under the Governors of Syria. The Jewish nation dispersed throughout the Persian Empire. Decrees of Cyrus and his successors, allowed a remnant, to return to their land and re-establish temple worship. Let us discuss for a moment who was Darius. Was he an epiphany? I ask this question, because in my mind it seems as though Darius just appeared almost like a figure in the author imagination.
