Dimmesdale drastically changed during all of the events. He went from a serious, happy man to an evil obsessive man. His compulsive pursuit for retaliation turned into self-destruction.

His obsession for vengeance caused himself traitorous pain. His fixation on harming Dimmesdale became the focus of his life. He spent years mentally torturing Dimmesdale when in reality he was only torturing himself. It was a bitter daily reminder of what Hester had done to him. It drove him insane when he saw the “A” engraved on Dimmesdale’s chest. He says, “With a ghastly rapture… and therefore bursting forth through the whole ugliness of his figure, and making itself even riotously manifest by the extravagant gestures with which he threw up his arms towards the ceiling, and stamped his foot upon the floor!” The author also describes his face as Satanic. He says, “Had a man seen old Roger Chillingsworth, at that moment of his ecstasy, he would have no need to ask how Satan comports himself when a precious human soul is lost to heaven and won into his kingdom.” He harmed himself by holding on to the past. Hester says, “Forgive and leave his further retribution to the power that claims it!
