The Parable of the Matrix
A parable can be a thing of beauty. Upon listening to the story, the listener’s intuition is prompted to find meaning. So very often, a single parable can hold more than one truth depending on the experiences one brings to it. Like a diamond, a parable’s quality can often be determined by the number of facets it contains. And it is entirely possible that a listener can divine a purpose out of a parable that greatly differs from what the writer intended. Therefore, parables hold great promise to those who crave to define their experiences. As spiritual beings, we all desire to seek meaning in our lives. For some, there is an even greater need to flesh out what that meaning would look like. Indeed, some individuals go so far as to strive for an explicit philosophy all their own. Because they deal with such abstract concepts, it is often difficult to truly convey them in a manner that seems practical or real. In order to share with others what their spirit and minds’ eye see; they seek out all the media they can. I am one such person. For me, movies can become the materials I need to build a parable. They have been an excellent way for me to describe feelings, philosophies
The Matrix is a parable to me. It holds both meanings I can relate to others, as well as those I have yet to decipher for myself. I can watch The Matrix and The Matrix Reloaded over and over. When I watch them, I can see how far my philosophy has developed. But more often than not, I scramble to find new facets that will propel me in the new directions I long for. The following essay, then, is not a movie review as much as it is a description about where I have come from, and where I might be going. enough of an understanding to know that there is no such thing as “problems” or “Evil” in the world. Such things are either mere projections of my own Fear, or a resistance to Faith. It is as a holy scripture says: "There are no problems, though you think you have." When you see evil or problems in your life, it’s only you acting out of a Matrix mentality, rather than acting like the One. Both on and off screen, it can be said that there are no problems, only an incomplete understanding of purpose. Just as I have defined Fear with a big F, so too, do I define Faith. To have faith in democracy, faith in my future, or even faith in a particular religion is to have little f's (just as a fear of snakes, or of failure, are little f's of fear). There is something much larger and deeper at work here. To see little f's, be it fear or faith, is to miss the big picture of what's really going on. Just as I have described Fear as a black shroud of perception, Faith is the removal of that veil. When I speak of Faith, therefore, it is something that is incomprehensible and something we move toward though we know not what it is. As the oracle says, "we can only see what we understand." Faith transcends what we understand, and can propel us forward. To borrow from Kierkegaard, we make a leap of Faith. Unfettered by assumption and small-mindedness, we create a “Movements of Faith.” Our movements, then, are the alternative to the Matrix. We can choose to suspend what we helped create. We can break the rules, and learn to fly just like Neo.
