Foundation Of Success

Education is the foundation of success. In all past and ancient societies the learned were the leaders, those who took initiative to seek knowledge. In order to effectively gain knowledge students had to be self-disciplined. In today’s society there is a slightly different twist. All children are required to receive a foundational education through a national school system. However, not ALL these students have the desire for learning or gaining the knowledge that will hold them to a higher standard. Therefore, a whole new system of discipline takes effect, not self-discipline, but supervised and enforced discipline. My question and topic for this paper is, can the teacher implement or inspire an attitude in which the student sees school as an atmosphere to seek knowledge and less as a prison of constant disciplines? The goal of the classroom today should be to provide an atmosphere based and focused on teaching students how to becoming a self-motivated learners and therefore self-disciplined students. The first classroom I would like to discuss, as an observational study, is a sixth grade English classroom. The teacher was obviously very strict. She required that all students respect her and her classroom time. She was very ster

n and quick with her disciplinary actions. For example one day she stepped out of the classroom for a short while to do some errand work, as she walked in the door to her classroom a student asked in a rather sarcastic manner, “How was the weather out there?” Immediately she replied, “That is disrespectful to my classroom and me, go down to the office.” These types of harsh and quick punishments provided her with a reputation that classified her as mean and harsh, but she ultimately had a class that responded to her instructions and her rules. Sometimes, however, her strict punishments gave way to more rebellious reactions and certainly a very nervous classroom atmosphere. On a couple occasions I observed students who waited until the teacher’s back was turned or she was out of the classroom to act up. The actions that they displayed during those times seemed to me much more outrageous than if the teacher had provided a more relaxed environment. That concluding statement seems to be a matter of opinion until I observed another classroom that I felt did convey a relaxed atmosphere. In that classroom I didn’t observe any rebellious actions that required disciplinary action. Also the discipline that did take place did not seem to overtake the relaxed atmosphere. The second classroom that I observed was a seventh and eighth grade special education class. These students are classified as learning disabled. I think I observed some of the students displaying hard fronts because they didn’t want to be classified or put behind the other children their age. Although these attitudes could have easily taken over the classroom atmosphere the teacher seemed to convey a warm feeling therefore providing a relaxed classroom atmosphere that required a limited amount of time for discipline. I will admit the second classroom had its moments in which the teacher was frustrated and the students were lacking in motivation, but overall I certainly picked up on a atmosphere that was more open and easy-going than the first classroom was. Things that I think provide good examples of this open and easy-going atmosphere was how she handled the students as they came in and out for special classes. Several of the students have certain classes in the regular classroom and certain classes with her as a special education class. As students came in and out during the day she had to offer some reminders of what she needed from them as the special needs teacher, but overa
