Sacrifice

Sacrifice is an essential factor in miracle plays. It plays an important role in the plays and in the beliefs of people. To sacrifice something is to give up something and you never know the value of possessions until they're gone.
Sacrifice, according to religious rituals means an act in which a consecrated offering is made to a god or other spiritual being in order to establish, perpetuate, or restore a sacred bond between humanity and the divine. These offerings may consist of humans or animals (blood offerings) or fruits, crops, flowers and wine (bloodless offerings). In all the miracle plays there is some sort of sacrifice, whether it be to God or within themselves. Throughout the plays sacrifice is explored. The examination of sacrifice in The Creation of Adam and Eve, The Fall of Man, Cain and Abel, Noah's Flood and Abraham and Isaac will be realized in the following passages. Although sacrifice has one meaning it is exp

The Fall of Man is the play after the creation. The cause of the fall was the disobeying of God. Adam and Eve were forbidden to eat from a certain tree; they sacrificed their lives in heaven and ate from that tree. With that sacrifice they both fell to earth. (Krogh 23). The way the story is told differs slightly with Christian and Islamic points of view. In Islamic view we see God as a just and fair God, He warns them not to eat from the tree but they fail to listen. "O Adam dwell with your wife in the Garden and enjoy as you wish but approach not this tree or you run into harm and transgression. Then Satan whispered to them in order to reveal to them their shame that was hidden from them and he said: "Your Lord only forbade you this tree lest you become angels or such beings as live forever." Satan swore to them both that he was their sincere adviser. So by deceit he brought them to their fall. When they tasted the tree their shame became manifest to them and they began to sew together the leaves of the Garden over their bodies. That’s when their Lord called unto them and said, "Did I not forbid you that tree and tell you that Satan was your avowed enemy?" (Quran 7:19-22). Adam and Eve got hit by reality and repented. They realized that they had disobeyed God by eating the fruit as a result they called upon Him and stated, "Our Lord we have wronged ourselves souls. If You forgive us not and bestow not upon us Your Mercy, we shall certainly be of the losers" (Quran 7:23). God accepts their plea: "... Thus did Adam disobey his Lord, so he went Astray. Then his Lord chose him, and turned to him with forgiveness, and gave him guidance." (Quran 20:121-122). The outcome was that Adam and Eve were instructed not to eat from a certain tree. Satan deceitfully tricked them into disobeying their Lord and as a result: "(God) said: 'Get down (from the Garden), one of you an enemy to the other [i.e. Adam, Eve, and Satan]. On earth will be a dwelling-place for you and an enjoyment -- for a short time'. He (God) said: 'Therein you shall live, and therein you shall die, and from it you shall be brought out [i.e. resurrected].'"(Quran 7:24-25). Adam and Eve were ordered to leave the Garden which they where in and descend to earth where they and their children will live and die, and where Satan will also be.

After falling on earth, Adam and Eve covered themselves with leaves. God refused to accept the clothes of leaves that Adam and Eve made for themselves. God wanted to teach them that sinners have no way of covering their shame before the Holy One who must judge them. Only God can save sinners from their guilt. Thus, we saw how God Himself sacrificed some animals, made clothes of skin, and put them on Adam and Eve. God made the first blood sacrifice. We also read how God announced that there would be two lines of people on earth: those who refuse to believe the Word of God, and those who believe it. We now view Adam and Eve's first two sons: Cain, who refused to believe God, and Abel, who believed God. Cain was a worker of the soil and Abel shepherded flocks. Once, they brought offerings to God: Cain of the fruits of the earth, but Abel of the best beast of the flock. Abel had a kind and humble nature; he brought his offering from a pure heart, with love and faith, with prayer for mercy and hope in the mercy of God; God accepted the sacrifice of Abel and its smoke rose into Heaven. Cain was cruel and evil. He offered his sacrifice only out of habit, without love and fear of God. The Lord did not accept his sacrifice, for the smoke from his sacrifice only spread along the earth.

s expressed in many different ways throughout these different miracle plays.
