Even if they had deformities or larger figures because of the children they bore, these were not shown in their figures. The men, on the other hand, were shown as fit and strong. Some older figures were shown as big-bellied men comfortably seated in thrones. Because women did not hold government positions, the equivalent of a successful bureaucrat may have been a woman who had borne many children but this of course was not depicted in the art. A woman¡¦s skin was usually a lighter colour than the skin of a man¡¦s. This implied the tendency that women stayed indoors while the man went out to work and participate in social activity. It also suggested that if the man were of high position, his wife stayed indoors because she did not need to work. Statuettes and artwork of the Old Kingdom showed women that wore tight fitting clothes that cling to the body. This type of clothing seemed unfit for real wear, as it would be very difficult to move or perform tasks in the depicted clothing. The tight fitting clothing of a woman was basically only representing and accentuating the sexuality of the female figure. By the time of the New Kingdom, the costume had changed to a less tight, draping material. This variation in costume suggests that maybe women became more involved with outdoor activities. The role that women in Ancient Egypt held cannot be accurately established because of the problems of history.
