Faustus in Dr Faustus

The nature of Faustus is not that complicated of a situation to figure out. Faustus in the simplest denominator is an arrogant and smug little man. Though you do feel somewhat tied to his nature because I believe in all of us is a little pettiness just waiting to get out. If we as humans were not petty, the world would be a much better place. If everyone was involved in cleaning up the world's problems instead of how they are going to get the stain out of their two thousand dollar silk suit. Faustus takes his greed and selfishness to the next level though when he sells his soul to the devil for infinite wisdom. The method that he used to gain the wisdom shows that he does not respect God, or at least feels that he is more important. .
He feels that gaining all that there is to know about the universe would give him what he really wants. Infinite power and wealth is what seduces Faustus into making the bonehead decision to sell his soul. He feels that building up the world's greatest amount of money and gaining access to the world will help him in his quest. He takes the easy way out for gaining these things. It shows that Faustus has no respect for theology because instead of working hard and achieving the wealth and power he so much homes to achieve, he takes the easy road to the Devil. .
Much like theology in the real work, you are faced with two paths. Path one is broad and there are no troubles but the end result is not desirable. Path two is filled with obstacles and dark times, but the end is filled with joy and love.
Throughout though, Faustus seems as if he wants to take back his decision. An easy path to take when you see that your choice is not reaping what you thought it would. It is a classic grass is greener scenario where you want something until you have it, and then you want to offload it. The only problem for Faustus is that his soul seems to be non-refundable.
