The origins of Cadbury Schweppes go back more than 200 years. Jacob Schweppe perfected his process for manufacturing mineral water in Geneva, Switzerland in 1783; John Cadbury first started selling tea and coffee in 1824 in Birmingham in the UK. Cocoa and chocolate, initially sidelines, became the main business within a few years.
Cadbury Schweppes plc was created through the merger of these two great British household names in 1969. Since then the business has expanded world-wide through a program of organic and acquisition led growth.
While confectionery and soft drinks remained the core of the business, the group also expanded into related food categories such as hot beverages and biscuits and also into health and hygiene.
