Perspiration and Perseverance
It was around Christmas time when I decided to execute my brilliant, or so I thought, plan to take my car apart and modify it to improve both its looks and performance. Everything started out as a secret between me and my mother because I knew that my father would not approve of me dismantling my car. Actually, to tell the truth, the car was paid for half by him and half by me and the car was in his name, which means that the car was technically his. This gave him the leeway to get mad at me for doing anything to “his” car. The major that I am currently studying is electrical engineering. Engineering is described by many as simply solving problems. The problem that I needed to solve was how to install performance parts on my car. I would have to develop my own solutions concerning the installation of parts and at the same time express my skills as an engineer. I ordered some performance parts from a few online stores to get my project started. I bought a carbon fiber brake handle and a carbon fiber automatic shifter knob. I also bought some blue neon and LED lights to light up my ride. I was very excited about the maroon 2001 Toyota Corolla CE that I received for my birthday. It is a hard car to find performan
I drove my car around with the interior panels off everywhere I went. It was around this time, in the middle of my project, that my father began to get suspicious of the parts lying about the garage and confronted me about it. I explained, nervously dripping with sweat, that I was interested in learning about how the car worked. He told me to find another hobby. He also told me that I could not drive my car until I put it all back together because it was not “road worthy.” Naturally, being the persistent person that I am, I decided not to listen to him and continued to modify the car. I merely hid all of the part in the trunk to make it seem as though I had put the car back together. The first part that I decided to install was the automatic shifter knob. In order to do this I needed to remove the original shifter. This proved to be a fairly difficult task. I had to remove most of the interior panels in the front half of the car to gain access to the shifter. I also had to cut through the plastic coating of the shifter and snip the overdrive wire to remove it. The overdrive was automatically on and since I did not plan on towing anything with my tiny Corolla I decided that it was okay
