Chekhov's use of imagery, to give the satire more axioms, is outstanding as he brings the smell and feel of the atmosphere before and after the conflict between his opposing characters. "Dmitritch gave a broad senseless smile" (page 198), "she was saturated through and through with the smell of cooking" (page 201). His ingenious word-painting give us a clear understanding of the thoughts in the mind of a being domineered by palpability.
