Investigative Literacy Portfolio

During the CAES 9920 course, I learned to compose and distinguish the difference between a business academic paper and case synthesis. This broadened the aspect of how my major was being applied in reality. Additionally, through peer review sessions, I was able to gain valuable insight from the audiences which helped develop my writing skill. Writing business academic paper took more time and effort because of extensive background research. During the process, I realized that academic papers require highlighting contrasting perspectives based on the same topic. Although, many corporates and analysts supported CSR, there were others who were against it; the impact on corporate reputation for wrongfully acted CSRs, lack of corporate's strategic planning and interference it has on achieving economics goals. I was especially intrigued by how Friedman's historic theories was still acknowledged and appreciated today, despite the changes in the current generation and situation. .
This academic paper helped me appreciate the conflicting views and carefully select and weigh out the advantages and disadvantages to develop the overall picture-the writer's purpose. Consequently, despite the opposing ideas, I concluded that CSR largely influences company's performance beneficially as it enhances the brand image, reduces operating costs and motivates employees for long-term benefits.
Moreover, the rigid essay structure and the use of jargons made the papers difficult to interpret. Academic papers require a general formal essay structure starting with an introduction, advancing with strongly supported argumentative paragraphs, containing examples and explanations and ending with a strong, concise conclusion. Since the nature of academic papers assumes audiences to have some knowledge in the area of business, most of them required at least more than three dictionary searches for jargons .
