Research Essay - The Boston Massacre

The Boston Massacre has always been a huge controversy, even two hundred and forty five years later. The Boston Massacre was an incident that occurred on March 5, 1770, in which British army soldiers killed five people and injured six. This incident fueled propaganda that tried to convince citizens that what happened on this day was not right and action had to be taken. British troops were stationed in Boston, Massachusetts to protect this unpopular government and make sure citizens were complying. "Amid ongoing tense relations between the population and the soldiers, a mob formed around a British sentry, who was subjected to verbal abuse and harassment. He was eventually supported by eight additional soldiers, who were subjected to verbal threats and thrown objects. They fired into the crowd, without orders, instantly killing three people and wounding others. Two more people died later of wounds sustained in the incident" (qtd in Wiki). Both the witnesses of this occurrence and the British officials involved had very persuasive reasons for its involvement and perspective.
             The American Perspective.
There are not many records of the American perspective of this event, but I feel the source I did find explained to me in thorough the anger and frustration Americans had with the British force at this time. "Soon after their arrival here in November, 1767, instead of confining themselves to the proper business of their office, they became partisans of Governor Bernard in his political schemes; and had the weakness and temerity to infringe upon one of the most essential rights of the house of commons of this province-that of giving their votes with freedom, and not being accountable therefor but to their constituents" (qtd in HistoryWiz). In short, what this man is saying is the British force that took control of the providence he felt infringed and unfearfully denied the right of voting which the Americans held so near and dear to them.
