The psychoanalytic perspective deals with personality and behavior caused by unconscious motives and conflicts. Sigmund Freud is introduced and it is discussed that he researched neurological disorders dealing with psychological causes. Freud discussed different regions of the human’s mind, one of which is the unconscious region- contains thoughts, wishes, feelings, and memories of which are unaware; some are stored in temporarily in a preconscious area from which we can retrieve them into conscious awareness. He came to a conclusion that we are being influenced by these troublesome feelings even though we are not consciously aware of them. The trait perspective states that behavior comes from expressing biologically influenced dispositions, or characteristics. Reading about this, I learned about the factor analysis, which is the statistical procedure to identify groups of test items that involve basic components of intelligence. I thought that this was really interesting because the use of factor analysis helped psychologists to come up with the "Big Five" personality factors, which categorize people’s personalities into five different sections: emotional stability, extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. I also found it very interesting that psychologists are able to assess several traits at once by personality inventories (longer questionnaires that cover a wider range of feelings and behaviors). The most popular personality inventory is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventoryà it assess abnormal personality tendencies and illustrates a good way of developing a personality inventory, rather than other tests. I am a little confused about the last part- I don’t really understand what it means.

The social-cognitive perspective deals with principles of learning, thinking, and social influence. The leader in this field was Albert Bandura- he called the process of interacting with our environment reciprocal determinism. He then discovered three separate ways in which individuals and environment interact: 1) different people choose different environments; 2) our personalities shape how we interpret and react to events; 3) our personalities help create situations to which we react. I then began to read about internal and external locus of control, which seemed a bit confusing to me and it took a while for me to understand. I now know that they both deal with personal control, and I understand that external deals with outside forces possibly changing perception and that internal deals with oneself
