The movie, Slim Hopes, was an eye-opener! Everything that Jean Kilbourne talked about in her movie were issues that I never really thought about, but now realize how true all of them are. Sterotypes in aspect of our every day lives, was the first topic she touched upon. A perfect example of this is any model by today's standards compared to a model even twenty years ago, and their change in sizes. Then she went on to talk about different body types, and what was common amoung normal females compared to these "fake" models. Magazines is another big outlet of advertising, that spends money so in return we'll spend money. What else is always on a girls mind? Food, and dieting. These two issues were also adressed. Now onto further identifying these issues, with some facts.
I never even realized how "slick" the advertising industry is. If you look at almost any ad, they all seem to be directed towards young people, and young teens espically. They want to grab us while we're young, and have money to spend on all of their products. We all want to look like that model on the front page, but what no one realizes is she doesn't even exsist. Recently, many companies have been using compuers to piece together the perfect woman. In other words they take one part of a woman, and another part from another woman, and piece together one combined perfect woman. So no matter how hard we try to become that model on the front page, we can't because most of them aren't real. Also, in these modern times we have the magic of computer retouching, which should be a service provided free to every woman in America. This can make you flawless, you can't even see any pores. Yet, again women who don't have pores don't even exsist. One part at a time is focused on, and zoomed in on. This makes me feel like a piece of meat, like we are an object, just something nice to look at, and only able to get by on how we look, not on our intelligence.
