Susan Anthony helped form the National Women Suffrage Association (1869-90) and later known as the National American Women Suffrage Association (1890-1906). The organization helped women campaign for many suffrage related issues. Miss Anthony campaigned for economic independence and opportunities for women. A few of her demands were equal pay for equal work, control of a woman’s’ own money, and for the right to vote. She also campaigned for easier divorce and custody of the children in the divorce. Susan put national focus on the suffrage issue in many ways. Her active participation in the movement for women suffrage started in the eighteen-fifties. As early as 1854 she arranged conventions throughout the state and annually bombarded the legislature with messages and appeals (Johnson 3). She was active in obtaining the passage of the act of the New York legislature in 1860 giving to married women the possession of their earnings and the guardianship of their children. During the war she was devoted to the Women’s Loyal League, which petitioned congress in favor of the thirteenth amendment. She was also directly interested in the fourteenth amendment, sending a petition in favor of leaving out the word “male”. Miss Anthony went to Kansas in 1867, and there obtained 9,000 votes in favor of women suffrage.
