Odour of Chrysanthemums
In his story, “Odour of Chrysanthemums,” D.H. Lawrence shows the emotion growth of his main character Elizabeth Bates. This emotion epiphany is best illustrated through his use of her character development, characterization. In the development of Elizabeth's character he allows the reader to see her angry, her concerns, her fears and eventually her awakening. In showing all of Elizabeth's thoughts and relationships it is easy to see why Elizabeth ultimately Characterization is the fictional element in which the author develops his characters. Lawrence uses this tool to bring the reader through Elizabeth's emotional epiphany. He begins by showing Elizabeth's situation and relationship with the people around her. This is an effective tool in developing characterization because in viewing the characters interaction with other characters the reader gets a better understanding of who that character is. The author not only shows Elizabeth's character in relation to the other character in the story but he then proceeds to show the reader Elizabeth emotional realization, through her own self reflection. Lawrence begins to develop her character by
showing Elizabeth's relationship with her to reevaluate the relationship her and her husband shared. While at the beginning Elizabeth Elizabeth shows her to be both concerned and angry.
