The “Dumb-Jock” stereotype originated in the 1930’s when a football player at Ohio State College needed to pass an economic test to be able to play in the big game, so the whole class got together and tutored him for a week straight so he could play in the game. A classmate painted a portrait of this incident and called it “The Football Player.” But during the 1930’s athletes weren’t perceived as uneducated, it wasn’t until the late 1980’s that statistics could back up the theory that athletes are treated differently and get admitted to college before an at-large student.

A lot of grief given to colleges is the money they spend on scholarships for athletes. An example of the amount of money college’s hand to their athletes is football players. NCAA allows 86 players to be on scholarship on a football team. Each year a coach is allowed to give out 25 new football scholarships. If a coach uses all 86 scholarships the University will hand out over two and half million dollars. People ask why would a university spend so much money on a game? The president of Florida State University said that funding these sports teams and high profile athletes it gives the university a good name, and a lot of fundraising. Tickets sell; National coverage of your college gives your college a lot of prestige.
