Advertising Sells The Sizzle

Sell the sizzle, not the steak. If cigarette advertisements were trying to sell the benefits of tobacco, they would inform the audience that smoking cigarettes gives people bad breath, makes their clothes stink, increases their risk of cancer, etc. Obviously the marketers of cigarettes don’t take that approach in their advertisements. The marketers sell the steak (cigarettes in this case) by selling the sizzle—what appeals to consumers—that smoking cigarettes enhances sex appeal and boosts your self-image. Let’s look at how two brands of cigarettes, Camel Cigarettes and Salem Cigarettes, appeal to two different groups of consumers. Camel Cigarettes advertises in GQ to target smoking or nonsmoking men and Salem Cigarettes uses Cozmopolitan for smoking women.

The ad for Camel Cigarettes in GQ targets smoking or nonsmoking men. The advertisement shows a cocktail waitress in the ad who looks seductive and has an alluring sex appeal. Men aren’t going to buy Camel Cigarettes because of the quality of the tobacco, but rather because of the image they see themselves projecting by smoking Camel Cigarettes. The cocktail waitress looks directly into the eyes of the audience and appears to be screaming out for sex. Her m

The pathos in the Camel ad are the men that the ad appeals to. The message conjures up emotions such as pleasure and lust. It makes the male audience feel that if they smoke Camel Cigarettes they will feel more confident about themselves and appeal more to females. The ad makes men want to jump up and smoke Camels because then they will feel that women like the cocktail waitress in the ad will be attracted to them. The pathos in the Salem ad are all the women that want to feel sexy and carefree just as the woman presented in the ad does. The message makes the audience feel that by smoking Salem Cigarettes with the green label, they will be living a carefree life. The glowing orb illustrates the sense of relaxation and separation from the world that the female audience feels they will achieve from buying this product. The orb gives off a green glow designed to stick in the female viewer’s mind. The next time she goes to purchase Salem, she will think of the green in the ad and buy the green box.

As you can see, the advertisements are trying to sell the sizzle—the image—that the audience will feel by using the product. The women in the ads project a sex appeal to

Like the Camel ad, the Salem ad features a woman. The difference is that unlike the Camel ad which is targeted towards males, the Salem ad is targeted towards smoking females. The ad is not only trying to convince women to smoke Salem, but to guide women who already smoke Salem to smoke the type with the green label. In the ad for Salem Cigarettes, the woman has her head tilted back with her eyes closed as smoke exhales from her mouth. She is relaxed and confident like every woman would like to be. She exudes a sensational sexual feeling as smoke exhales into the air. The atmosphere surrounding the woman in the Salem ad consists of nothing except for a green glowing orb. A bright green glow radiates off of the orb and hits the top of the woman’s face. The color green compliments the green label
