A few years back, I received a phone call from a friend whom I hadn't seen for some time. He sounded really nice on the phone and told me that he wanted to catch up on old times. We arranged to meet each other at Eunos MRT, which was a bit strange considering he lived nearer to the Hougang area, but what the heck, I was really looking forward to seeing a familiar face. Having undergone more than a year of National Service, I longed to see a face from a life I used to lead and seemed to have grown out off. So I met him at Eunos, we exchanged greetings and he suddenly asked me to follow him somewhere. He was walking really fast and I could only assume he was really hungry and leading me to a nearby coffeeshop or something. But I was wrong. He led me to a building, a commercial building and introduced me to a "business associate" of his. Then it struck me I was led on a trail of gingerbread biscuits and candy canes all the way to Baba Yaga's lair. I fell right into it. In the end, blinded by greed and what seemed a friendly wool over my eyes, I "invested" a few months of my NSF pay to be part of the business. Suffice to say it didn't work out. What I was really angry with was not the fact that I had lost money in the investment, but how unimportant my "friend" saw our "friendship" to be. Closing a business deal on the pretext of friendship. Now when I look back, I don't even know if we were ever friends to begin with. When money precedes friendship or any other forms of relationship for that matter, you just get the feeling that relationships don't count for much anymore. You begin to ask yourself who are the ones you can truly count on in times of need. and you begin to doubt if you could be the same for them in their times of need as well. Truly, living in a world increasingly populated by hypocrites, you begin to ask whether or not you are one as well.
For about more than a month now, I have had the fortune to work with some of the best people I have met.
