A decade or so ago, people would often spend their weekdays at the office. Meeting around the water cooler to gossip, going out to lunch together, and meeting for a drink after work were the norm. Anyone who found themselves at home with small children would probably be running errands. Busy parents would tote their young ones to the grocery store, the bank, the mall, and then possibly to a friends house for lunch before returning home to greet their other children returning home from school. Face-to-face interaction was commonplace; from co-workers to the bank teller, from the lunch partner to the cashier at the GAP, we were interacting with people at every turn. Today that has all changed. For a large number of people face-to-face communication has become outdated. The office worker is now able to work from home, e-mailing and video conferencing allow them to work from the comfort of their own home. That busy parent? They are saving valuable time by doing their groceries, paying their bills, and shopping at the GAP online. And why meet that friend for lunch when you could just chat with her online? On top of that, the school aged-children would never even have to leave the house. They can now attend school online
The fact that we have this sort of freedom is just one of the ways that the internet has changed relationships. Before the introduction of the World Wide Web, we were restricted to making friends that lived within close proximity to ourselves. While this was nice, and undeniably convenient, it did not allow us to cross barriers such as language and culture. This change in the physical closeness of relationships has broken down walls and opened up minds worldwide. On the other hand, a relationship can only go so far before wanting to have that physical closeness; when relationships become more serious, or even intimate, people want to meet the “stranger” on the other end. This differs from “real life” in a significant way. We do not always have the option of who to talk to and who to ignore. Everyone has to deal with ignorant, rude, or hurtful people daily. Unfortunately, we are not generally introduced to people solely on the basis of shared interests or experiences, but usually because of mutual friends, or through work, or even just by chance. However, a downside of written language is that it can be easily misinterpreted. Without the aids of body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice, mix-ups are common between online friends and couples.
