Religion is sense of human relationship with forces beyond nature. During the history human had a need to have relations with something they believed and could support protect them. Some religions believe the life after death, some have one or more gods and some religions as Atheism do not believe in god and the forces beyond nature. In the Vodun religion it is believed that man and the cosmos are made of 2 things. They are said to be half supernatural, half material. This theory is represented in the Vodun cross it shows how man and cosmos reflect each other in the mirror. Vodun’s roots may go back 6000 years in Africa, this makes Vodun one of the oldest religions in the world. Name is traceable to an African word for “spirit”. Vodun functions are to help people endure the trials and tribulations of daily life like starvation, disease, and death, and to celebrate life. The religion provides teachings and practices about morality and spirituality to assist its devotees in evolving their consciousness. Vodun adepts are well known for their energy mastery and their expertise with spirits, plants and minerals. Vodun can be directly traced to the West African Yoruba people in 18-19 century in Dahomey, this country occupie
The purpose of rituals in Vodun to is make contact with a spirit, to gain their favor by offering them animal sacrifices and gifts. Vodun priest is either male who is called Houngan or female called Mambo. During rituals Loa is called to join the rite and the person is chosen by the Loa for possession. The chosen person will start to make jerky movements and may fall to the ground in convulsions. This is the spirit of the person being replaced with the spirit of the Loa. The term used is "mounting", as the spirit of the Loa then "rides" the possessed person. Once the Loa is present, the person's behavior, mannerisms and even language can change, and the others present can tell which Loa has joined them. During the rest of the ritual, the Loa may answer questions, give guidance or perform healings. The other participants will offer the spirit their preferred foods or drinks. When the ceremony is complete, the spirit will leave and the person will have no memory of what had occurred during the possession and will be exhausted by the experience. Vodun shares many similarities with most spread religions in the world and it’s also probably one of the oldest religions. Suppression of Vodun during colonial times made this religion to spread out of Africa well. It is very strange and unusual that Vodun has no rules of behavior or some kind of written book like Bible in Christianity, it somehow gives freedom of choice to the people that follow this religion. However Vodun has many traditions and is reach with plenty of beliefs. In Vodun religion each group follows different spiritual path and worships different pantheon of spirits which are called “Loa” and it means mystery in Yoruba language. Traditional belief of Yoruba has a main God Olorun and the God of less significance Obatala who was authorized by main God to create Earth and all life forms. Fight between God Olurun and Obatala ended with victory
