The Passion of the Christ:: A comparison with the Gospels
In Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ”, an androgynous, Satanic figure, taunts Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. “Do you really believe one man can carry this burden?” Jesus struggles in prayer, beseeching his Holy Father to give him the strength to carry out his mighty task. In a defiant gesture, Jesus stomps the head of a snake, sent by Satan to bite Jesus. This killing of the snake, illustrates Jesus resolve to destroy sin, even if by sacrificing his own life. This scene clearly demonstrates Jesus’ agony over what he knows is to come. However, this scene never occurs in the bible. While dramatic and effective to the viewer, this scene, along with several scenes was drawn from Gibson’s poetic vision of The Passion. Gibson relied on the combination of the Gospels, and other religious sources, such as the visions of mystic nuns Sister Anne Emmerich and Mary of Agreda. A few scenes are also created by Gibson in order to dramatize The Passion. In comparing Gibson’s movie with the Gospels, I have compared and contrasted several of the scenes. In dealing with the conspiracy against Jesus, Gibson refers to several passages in the Gospels. Matthew, Mark and Luke, all refer to
the betrayal of Jesus by Judas Iscariot. Matthew is the only gospel that refers specifically to the thirty pieces of silver that is given to Judas as payment for his betrayal. (Matthew 26: 14-16) Luke mentions that, “Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve.” (Luke 22: 3) This is the only mention as to what Judas motivation for his betrayal might have been. Gibson does not touch upon this in his movie and leaves it unexplained. In reviewing the Passion story in the Gospel, I noticed that Gibson left out the Anointing at Bethany from his movie. Matthew, Mark and Luke all mention this story in the Passion narrative. Gibson omits this from his version. This Gospel narrative illustrates the fact that, despite Jesus’ preaching and forewarning to his disciples about the task at hand, that they still did not fully comprehend the true message behind it. The simple task of anointing Jesus with expensive perfume showed to Him that this woman understood; not only did she demonstrate her devotion and love for the Savior, but that she understood His true identity and purpose. The disciples failed to acknowledge this and instead rebuked the woman for wasting the perfume. Jesus’ reprimands his disciples and asks them “why are you bothering her?” (Mark 14:6) Jesus knows that her motives were pure, while the disciples are concerned with the overall value of the perfume itself. When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders. "I have sinned," he said, "for I have betrayed innocent blood." “Jesus responds, ‘Yes, it is as you say,’ Jesus replied. ’But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.’ Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, ’He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?’ "What is that to us?" they replied. "That's your responsibility." The Institution of the Lord’s Supper
