DRAGON'S TEETH

Literary Analysis - Lawrence Ferlinghetti - Dragon’s Teeth

In college Ferlinghetti had many accomplishments. His first was receiving a B.A. degree at the University of North Carolina. He received his Master of Arts Degree at Columbia University a few years later, and his Doctorate in poetry at The Sorbonne, a college in France. While in college, Ferlinghetti started writing for a newspaper, where he first tried his hand at poetry.

“Ferlinghetti never chooses to know anything that would refine, complicate, or deepen the flat, plebeian verdicts he passes on phenomena he fails to completely understand, or which he fails to discern any secondary qualities which would invest them with the adequate mystery for becoming subjects of a poem!... Open Eye, Open Heart I shall resist the most coarse association available and merely note in conclusion that Ferlinghetti’s most conspicuous physical qualification as a poet is his wide open mouth.” (Young, 171) This is a summary of one of Ferlinghetti’s most famous collections of poetry, said to be one of the most powerful collections of poetry he has ever published.

Mechanically, this poem is quite simple. Ferlinghetti uses four stanzas in this poem. The first is an eighteen-line stanza. The second, third, and fourth stanzas are quatrains, or four-line stanzas.

The last stanza of the poem is “As the smart bombs sowing hate, Kept falling and falling and falling.” This concludes the poem and states again that the bombing of Iraq will only spread hatred, and as long as the bombs keep falling, the hatred will keep spreading.
