I have read many articles from the Toronto Star concerning India's 1 billionth baby, and I must say that this brings me to much concern about the well being of India's population and future, and I"m totally against any celebration. Every newborn baby is another mouth to feed, another child to cloth and educate, and the most significant, more strain on the countries natural resources. India is a country facing a problem that will turn into a crisis if not dealt with, and this is no time for celebrating. India's pace of population increase is one that will lead to India becoming the most populated country by approximately 2040. Although many of us are just starting to realize this problem, the idea has been around for a long time. Over two hundred years ago, a man by the name of Thomas Robert Malthus theorized the effects of population and the food supply. This Theory dealt with the growth of population and if not controlled, how it would destroy man's survival on Earth. There are many factors as to why India, and many other third world countries, reproduce at such a rate. Lack of contraceptives, traditional values, high infant mortality, and poor education are a few of these factors. It is a lot easier for a country to deal with its problems if it has less people and it is almost impossible for a developing country to move from the Third World to the First World when their population is rising so rapidly. Malthus believed that the evolution of mankind existed in cycles. Good times occurred when there were high wages and good living conditions, which led to early marriages and rapid population increase. Then come the bad times. Disease, low wages, and epidemics lead to population decrease and a balance between population and resources. However due to foreign aid and advances in medicine, disease and epidemics have been kept to a very low amount, but Malthus's theory can still be proven correct as population continues to increase.
