Top Ten Deficiencies of Man

Man is a creature of many deficiencies. Some of his flaws may be overcome through knowledge and reason, but many are inescapable and a priori. These deficiencies include, but are not limited to: selfishness, conformity, language, and hero worship. This essay will attempt to expose and explain the ten most prominent deficiencies of man. Through humility, self-awareness, and acknowledgment some men may be able to overcome the numerous defects of humanity.

Man is in constant isolation because his mind is limited to self. The human mind can only ever truly comprehend it’s own thoughts and processes; man can never know if his perceptions of the phenomenal world match those of humanity. Imagine that the sky was actually purple – though you would call it blue because that was the word assigned to the sky. You could spend your life calling all things purple ‘blue’ and never be wrong. Man’s sensual classifications could be unique to the individual experiencing them. The example used above relating to colors could relate to all of the mind’s functions – emotions, actions, and even relationships. The mind creates the world we live in, and allows us to experience it; however, our perceptions are trapped within the mind of th

Man’s language is insufficient to express the abilities of the human mind. Language is a necessity to man, whether through signals, hieroglyphics, or complex verbs and adjectives, man must share himself with others. However, his language is limited to objects in the nominal world. Man has trouble assigning words to abstract ideas such as love, dignity, or respect. These things exist only in other men’s experience (or lack of experience). This is the reason why many young people are confused about love – for some love means buying presents and talking in baby babble, for others love is a connection based on respect and adoration. Man frequently cannot express his emotions, thoughts, or higher states of self because man’s language is based on the objective.

Man is constantly striving for superiority. Through competition man gains validity and a false sense of honor. The most significant periods of history are marked by battles, plagues, expeditions, and discoveries – all of which clearly mark the superiority of an individual and the inferiority of the rest. This need for superiority can be applied Darwin’s theory of evolution; that only the best will survive and mate with other superiors. Unfortunately man’s quest for superiority goes beyond merely surviving and mating, as demonstrated by capitalism, fascism, totalitarianism, and more commonly, racism. Racism is exhibited by ignorant, sad little people who are unable to find virtues within themselves that make them superior in some sense. A racist has nothing within himself that is superior to others, and therefore he proclaims his skin color (a color he did not choose) to be superior to all others. Though an intelligent person could declare this as unreasonable, men who proclaim racial superiority are generally without reason.

Man’s isolation of the mind is the cause of his greatest deficiency: selfishness. Because man can never truly understand the mind of another, he is limited to pleasing himself. However, man is a social creature and his society does not pride itself on selfishness; this kind of statement is usually followed by strong words and protest. Charitable actions, it could be argued, do not coincide with this theory. However, one m
