Two of my friends went in for interviews for the same job. The first was more than qualified for the job. He went in to the interview with wrinkled kakis, a t-shirt, old shoes, and he hadn't shaved in a week. The other had no experience and had only one job in his life. He walked into the interview with freshly pressed dress pants, a button up dress shirt, polished shoes, and a freshly shaved face. Guess who got the job; the better dressed. .
In today's world image is everything. If a salesman walked up to you with his shirt untucked, he wrecked of body odor, and looked like he had been out partying all night would you buy something from him? Of course not. Why? Because subconsciously you will not fully trust someone who is poorly dressed and poorly groomed. How can you trust someone who can't ever take care of themselves?.
Even if you"re not at your job or at an interview it is still important to look your best. When people first see or meet you the first thing they notice is what you"re wearing and how you look. Looking your best will gain you respect anywhere you go. A few years back I went to pick up a girl for a date. I walked in to meet her parents. Her mother loved me, before we left her house her mother gave me a hug goodbye. Let me assure you, it wasn't my charming personality, or lack there of. A few days later I asked the girl why her mother had taken to me so well. She said that her mother told her that all of her past dates looked like little hood rats and that I was the first one who "looked" respectable.
You don't have to be the most attractive person in the world; you just need to look well dressed and well groomed. There have been many books written, TV specials, and newspaper articles all on this subject. I still walk around and see people dressing poorly and not taking care of themselves. If you take a look at all the most successful people you know you will notice one thing they all have in common.
