This is an issue hotly and widely debated by parents whose children are ready to enter college. The New York Times Job Hunting Survey in July 2003, suggested that students who graduate from prestigious colleges are more likely to have better career choices than those from second-echelon colleges. In other words, degrees from celebrated universities do contribute to successful job hunts. But would this be the reason that many students are willing to struggle and to take all steps necessary to enter elite universities? I

believe there are several explanations to confirm that this may be true.

Second, our society still discriminate universities based on prestige. Employers more often reach out to graduates from prestigious schools. Some companies tend to make hiring decisions based more on what is shown on the applicants’ resumes than on the interview process. If there are two resumes showing the same educational qualifications, interviewing priority will tend to be given to the applicant from an elite university over that from a state college. Since it will not be easy to change the inveterate discrimination of our society, it would in fact be in the best interest of students to strive to enter a prestigious university in order to improve their career opportunities.

How, then, does a student proceed? In my view, it is important to make careful college decisions that according to one’s interests and abilities. Yet, given the potential positive effects on career opportunities, education quality, and personal growth that top schools can bring, I believe it is also essential for a student to set his mind on competing with others to enter a good university, despite the associated hard work and stress. Since the admissions process is very competitive and uncertain, which means that many highly qualified students would end up being denied admission into top colleges, and that this does not necessarily mean a less successful future. Only by cultivating his best abilities and a resolute mind will he assure future brilliance.

For me, in order to pursue my future career in civil engineering, I decided to study abroad; I wanted to see more of the world.
