The Stranger
In a novel by Albert Camus, The Stranger, Mersault is a detached human being with no point to his life. He is completely isolated with the society where he live because he never meets any of the society's expectations. Even after his mother's death, he doesn't seem to care about anything and does not seem to have changed even a little bit. After he finds himself committing a murder, he realizes what he did and now what he is in the eyes of the community. Incredibly, the society makes a foolhardy decision to send Mersault to prison which changes Mersault's life forever. Mersault is a damaged being who loses his life unfairly because he is too honest to hide his personal opinions and vision of the world. It is the alienating and judgmental modern society more than Mersault himself who is to blame for the absurd murder and the unfair execution.Mersault always says the truth and he says what is in his heart even if it might be terrible for his reputation in society. When Mersault was walking to his mother's funeral, he was not concentrated on what had happened to his mother and what was actually going on, but he was bothered by something else. " I felt a little lost between the blue and white of the sky and the monotony of the colo
"So close to death, Maman must have felt free then and ready to live it all over again. Nobody, nobody had the right to cry over her. And I felt ready to live it all over again too. As if that blind rage had washed me clean, rid me of hope; for the first time, in that night alive with signs and stars, I opened myself to the gentle indifference of the world." (122) Poor Mersault realized that in this world society means everything, and he was ready to live life all over again, just if he could. He would do anything to live life, because he realized that saying the truth and saying stuff straight out of the heart is most of the times not beneficial. Mersault was always depicted as a killer of his mother, and the Arab who tried to kill Mersault's friend and the people hated him for a crime that he possibly did not commit. He realizes that his mother was free to die, and she was free because she knew that she will be ready to live a brand new life. Mersault had now adapted to society's needs and he had now learned to live a life like any other normal man. "For everything to be consummated, for me to feel less alone, I had only to wish that there be a large crowd of spectators the day of my execution and that they greet me with cries of hate." (123) The society has made Mersault reach to a level of absurdity that he can never recover from which really does make him look like a bad criminal. They have portrayed him as a criminal and a person who threatens the society. So now he wishes nothing more than cries of hate because he knows he is not going to get anything else except cries of hate. This alienating society has made Mersault a criminal just because he does not seem to be like one of them. Mersault, in The Stranger, has always been a criminal since the death of his mother. People have tried to say whatever they can, even lies, to get Mersault to be executed, their hatred towards him has kept on growing just because he is not one of them. While at the trial, the prosecutor made an unbelievable statement regarding Mersault. "And also according to him, a man who is morally guilty of killing his mother severs himself from society in the same way as the man who raises a murderous hand against the father who begat him." (102) Just because Mersault did not cry at his mother's funeral and did not seem to show any emotions, he is morally guilty of killing her; this is absurdity to the maximum. The prosecutor also believes that this is the same as killing a father, which is absolutely not true, but he is saying this lie simply to get Mersault into further trouble. The society has its own expectations which need to be followed correctly.
