Imagine a world that is fair and offers equal opportunity to anyone who pursues improvement in life. Women and other minorities have been discriminated against since the beginning of time. In modern day society minorities are striking back. Women now run companies such as Carleton S. Fiorina, CEO of Hewlett-Packard.

We have seen powerful women like Hillary Clinton enter high political positions. Janet Reno was elected as the first woman Attorney General. Women , such as Oprah Winfrey dominate the entertainment industry. Oprah has overcome many discriminations being a strong black woman. These women are all very successful and have seemed to break through the “glass ceiling”, but we still have a long way to go. In the business world women can be just as qualified as men but something always seems to hold them back. The invisible barrier that holds women back from achieving their goals is called the glass ceiling.

Women from all walks of life will have to face barriers of discrimination. I recently interviewed a woman director who was appointed to public office. I will refer to this woman as Mrs. Smith for privacy reasons. Mrs. Smith grew up in a Metropol


There have been laws to increase equality in the work place such as affirmative action. Arrirmitve action ensures that a company will employ a certain number of minorities, and this includes women. Most men in the corporate world consider Affirmative Action unfair. It is rare to find a case of straight out racism or discrimination in business corporations today. There are many laws and lawsuits to be faced if discrimination can be proven. The glass ceiling is a more subtle type of discrimination. It is a way to keep women held back and it is very hard to prove. Things look great for women on the outside, but on the inside men are calling the shots and pretending to give women equal opportunities.

It seems that women have to work twice as hard to achieve what comes easy to most men. The glass ceiling can mean different things to different people. I do not feel that women and other minorities should be given anything that is not deserved. Discrimination will never be totally abolished, because it has been handed down for generations. The only way to break the glass ceiling is through actions, not words. The men of our world are starting to realize the importance of women in the business world. Men are seeing women in powerful roles and may feel threatened, but women are still excluded from “the big boys club”.

There are organizations designed to help women business owners. The National Women’s Business Enterprise Council and the National Woman Business Owners Corporation are examples of organizations that help women succeed in business. These entities are giving women the unlimited opportunities by improving systems of corporations and government. Edie Fraser, President of the BusinessWomen’s Network gave a speech about women and minorities in business. She reported that the resilience of our economy -in fact its very survival depends on our ability to create value for all Americans. The way to create value for all Americans is to build companies that are representatives of all Americans. Edie Fraser went on to say that women are shattering through stereotypes and breaking through misconceptions. Women-owned businesses are just as financially strong and creditworthy as the average U.S. firm . Women may not dominate the top rungs of corporate America, but we are climbing the ladder fast. According to Edie Fraser, 12.5% of all corporate officers in the Fortune 500 are women. (Speech, Women and Minorities In Business)
