Is Americas's Youth Putting It's Future In Jeopardy

In Peter Sack’s book the 13th generation goes to college, Sacks talks about how the students in his journalism class were simply unprepared for college level work. Important skills such as critical thinking and English composition were way below the level necessary to complete the assignments. Being able to write is one of the fundamental cornerstones of any good education, and the inability to communicate a point on paper can hurt one’s credibility. The effects of not being able to write properly could even hurt the chances of getting the position they want.

Kids today have more distractions and more to worry about then ever before remember when I was in school I had to have a job if I wanted money to do things with my friends, and had to watch my sister after school until my parents got home. So it’s not unreasonable to say that students have short attention spans but you have to look at this frantic fast paced world that they live in. Microwave ovens, access to almost any information in the world through the world wide web, beepers, cell phones, and many other modern advancements that are designed to speed you though your day. All of these modern day tools have had a latent result on the users; people now are handling multiple tasks at ounce with relative ease. Maybe modern kids do have short attention spans but you almost have to if you want to take advantage of all the technology that life has to offer. Why read a book to find out something about the pyramids when you could get on the web and go right to the information you want without leaving your house? This technology frees up a lot of time for people who nowadays have a hard time finding any free time.

Today’s students score lower on tests that their parents and Grandparents did, but maybe that’s the problem. These tests are not really an accurate determination of a student’s intelligence in a modern, fast paced and highly technical world that either of the two preceding generations had to deal with. Generation Xers may not be as proficient in the three “R’s” but you can’t dismiss them or call them inferior, understand them and the world that they were brought up in. Today’s youth has evolved to survive in their world just like Americans had to in the past They may make mistakes but you can’t write them off as losers.
