Now I want to reverse the situation in the story Lust. The boy is now in the goat house and a girl would not let him out until he reveals his underwear to her. What would this do to the boy? My research shows that the boy would not like this situation at all. In the Field Guide to Parenting it states, ?Stereotypes promote the false idea that boys and girls have different and predictable behavior and feelings based on their gender.? The boy would not show his underwear because he would have already picked up the stereotype that it was a girl?s place to show her underwear and not his. The young boy would think that if he showed his underwear this would make him less of a man. The young girl already has the stereotype that women?s bodies are a work of art and should be showed off. Children do not realize that these stereotypical images are in their mind, but know when it is right for someone of their sex to do something. This shows how gender stereotypes affect the outcome of a person?s life.

The narrator had a hard time filling both her gender and class roles. She went to a very high-class school that did not accept how she filled her gender role, at least in public. We see this when the narrator states, ?The headmaster told me he didn?t care what I did but that Casey Academy had a reputation to uphold in the town.? She had to continue to give into men or she would not be accepted by any of them. The headmaster knew this and told her, ?If you want to smooch with your boyfriend, there are twenty acres for you to do it out of the public eye. You read me?? This was just telling her that he knew her ?label? and it was not accepted in a high classed school.

The narrator of Lust is from an upper class family. This is obvious when she says, ?On vacations, we went skiing, or you?d go south if someone invited you. Some people had apartments in New York that their families hardly ever used.? Since she is from an upper class stature she has much more freedom than someone from the middle class, but not as much freedom as someone from the lower class. If her family did not have the money to send her to away to school or had time to spend with her she might have been a totally different person. She would not have had to give into men to be accepted. Her parent?s influence and guidance would not have let her get accepted in this way.
