Looking for Alibrandi - Emancipation


            
             In the novel "Looking for Alibrandi" Josie expresses her wish to be emancipated, to be free from cultural judgment and the boundaries of social class. By the end of the novel she realizes that she had been emancipated, not by one single event, but by her experiences throughout the entire year.
             Josie's relationships with her mother and nonna had changed dramatically by the end of the novel, this was because Josie had started to think of them as people, she had spoken to her nonna about when her nonna was seventeen and realized that her nonna had also wanted freedom. When Josie's mother begins to date Josie realizes just how small their seventeen year age difference was and her and her mother begin to understand each other better.
             By the end of the novel Josie had accepted her cultural background. At first Josie felt as if being an Italian was a burden and her family's traditions were an embarrassment, as she became more mature she began to see things differently. The quote "I am an Australian wits Italian blood flowing rapidly through my veins" shows that she became proud of her culture and heritage.
             During the novel Josie becomes involved with Jacob. She learns a lot about romantic relationships, there relationship does not last but Josie understands why it ended and learns from it. During their relationship Josie begins to realize that social differences were not keeping them apart, that it was the fact that neither knows where they were going. At the end of the novel they have broken up but Josie still loves him and hopes that they will be together again.
             Through the novel we see Josie's struggle to be emancipated, and by the end she was. She faced issues that caused her to look at what she was doing and because of her realization she became "free". At the start she acted immaturely but she learned a lot from her mistakes and began to grow up. "all of my life I have been worried about what people think all of a sudden I realized that I didn't care" she understands that that all people will criticize but the minute you stop caring you will become free.
