Marijuana should be made legal for the public to enjoy in peace. Like alcohol and tobacco, marijuana should be regulated so that people who want to smoke it can. By legalizing marijuana, our economy can benefit in different ways as well as solve many issues that we have in our country and world. Legalizing marijuana can help with our overcrowding prison problem. It can also help provide us a cleaner

environment because of what hemp can replace. Hemp can be used to make paper rather that cutting down rain forest trees to make paper. Enforcing marijuana laws only prevents our society from obtaining benefits in the aspects of: socially, economically, industrially, and medically. Marijuana laws also violate people’s Constitutional rights; it takes away basic freedom that we are promised by the Constitution.

Whether or not marijuana is harmful to the human body, it is still upon the decision of the individual to consume marijuana. “…in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, protect…basic civil liberties to ‘purse his own happiness’ as long as he doesn’t infringe on others’ rights to life and property” (Cussen and Block, par. 2). Smoking marijuana is a victim-less crime. Smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol are known to have harmful effects upon the human body, yet people still chose to smoke and drink. People should have those same rights to choose whether or not they want to smoke marijuana. Society should not tell people what they can or cannot do to their bodies. Rather, instead of trying to control individuals, it should expose positive and negative facts, such as the ones to smoking marijuana. This way, society has allowed individuals to still make their own choices, but informed choices.

The advantages and medical application of marijuana to AIDS are quite similar to those of cancer patients. AIDS patients smoke marijuana for the same reason cancer patients do: “it is more effective and has fewer unpleasant side effects, and the dosage is easier to adjust to”(Grinspoon 146). Zidovudine (AZT), an anti-viral drug that is used to treat AIDS patients, can help AIDS patients but at the same time offers many drawbacks upon its usage…”these drugs sometimes cause severe nausea that heightens the danger of semi-starvation for patients”(Grinspoon 146). AIDS patients that have to take these drugs, in order to stay “healthy” having to face the drawbacks of these drugs that help them and hurt them at the same time. There is a way to lessen the drawbacks of these drugs, the answer is within marijuana, which Grinspoon states as useful for people who suffer from AIDS because it relieves the nausea and help regain weight by enhancing their appetite, which can prolong their life (146).

It is not the fault of the individuals who causes terror amongst us, but rather the flaws society has created to allow such market to exist and pay for heartless acts of violence. It is not the fault of the drug dealer, who was caught distributing marijuana and sentence to five years in prison; overcrowding our packed jails on the expense of the tax payer. It is the flaws within our society, in these cases, that allow unfair and unconstitutional marijuana laws to hurt us, rather than protect us. The marijuana related issues/problems our society continues to endure and fight off is not the results of the marijuana smokers or dealers, it is rather the result of the laws enforced against marijuana which criminalize individuals for possession, distribution, and consumption of the herb. These laws also continue to allow a black market of marijuana to exist, which only help people involved in the black market trade.

Within the Social Conflict Theory by Karl Marx, false consciousness is defined as when social problems are blamed upon individuals rather than the flaws of society (Macionis 98). Today marijuana holds its ground upon the black market where street gangs, crime rings, terrorism and other outlaw gangs control its profits. Marijuana is distributed all over the world and the money profited, keep gangs and terrorists alive. Not only does the money keep them going, it also provide illegal weapons for gangs, and it the case of terrorism, it made the killing of nearly 3000 people on September 11, 2001 possible.
