Racing In The Streets

Imagine yourself sitting in the driver’s seat of your car. Now imagine that your dream machine has a supercharged, nitrous oxide injected engine with more horsepower than an Indy car. The driver in the vehicle next to you gives you the familiar glance and nod. You both rev up your engines, attempting to intimidate the other into backing down. It doesn’t work. The man standing between your cars raises his arms up into the air. You pause, visualizing what will happen next. The man drops his arms; you hammer the gas pedal. In seconds you pass fifty, sixty, seventy miles per hour. In less that half of a minute and one-quarter of a mile, you muscle your car past the other driver and exceed 100 miles per hour. When you return to the starting line, you are congratulated by your friends, fellow racers, and those who just came to watch the races. No money is involved, at least not this time, and you sit, eager to again prove that you have the fastest car on the street. This scene is played out all too often on our city and suburban streets. Is this life of “the fast and the furious” endangering innocent lives? If it is, then how do we solve it?

Is street racing a problem? The answer is without a doubt, yes. The re

“Racers love their sport enough to risk accident or death.” (Rebels with Cause) These illegal and dangerous activities are not even always for money “often, it’s just for bragging rights.” (Wood and Scherer Staff) Street racing, illegal and idiotic, can simply be boiled down to stunted mental development, or maybe, simply, a lack of a brain. “’Some people do stupid things.’ If you ask Los Angeles police Captain Ron Bergmann, just being out here qualifies.” (Lopez) As I said before, street racing is simply stupidity. As a testament to the stupidity of the sport, most racers do not fear being caught, rather that they “might not win.” (Rebels with Cause)

It is clearly evident that street racing is a very imminent problem facing mainstream America, whether we like it or not. The problem then becomes how can this problem be solved? In this author’s opinion, there is no definite fix to this problem. “The kids will still race, and the cops will still chase.” (Lopez) It doesn’t matter where you live in the United States, if your town or city has one-way straight roads, eventually racing is bound to happen.

As a direct result of the variety of people in this nation, comes the variety of possibilities for solving the problem of street racing. Most precincts across the nation have decided that tougher enforcement and stricter punishment will solve the street racing phenomenon. “In addition to nabbing those behind the wheel, spectators can be apprehended for aiding and abetting races. And car owners often get cited for modifications made to their car engines and exhaust systems.” (sdstreetracing.com) Some cities have a different approach, “one solution is a municipal ordinance that allows police to impound the automobiles of those arrested for racing.” (Street Racing) This strategy has worked for a few people such as Ortega. He was arrested for racing in June 2000 and “says he’s serving 18 months probation. He has paid more than $2000 in fines and court and impound fees. His license was revoked for six months. Although he attends races several times a week, he says he is not sure he’ll risk racing again.” (sdstreetracing.com) Cases such as Ortega’s are few and far between.

Police have tried a different approach to the problem; “for deterrence, cops try to make their presence felt.” (Rendon) The police know where the local race hangouts are and as a result “most nights, the cops and the race crowd pl
