Years of designing for the theater earned him a respectable reputation in the fashion industry, but his collaborations with American photographer Richard Avedon helped Versace become one of the world's elite designers. His 1982 collection introduced metallic garments that would become his trademark and his elaborate stage costumes for Hollywood’s finest. Versace had an extensive empire that included boutiques, fragrances and household products. Versace became one of the world’s most prestigious fashion designers of all times. His impeccable taste and attention to detail made him superior to all other designers. Gianni Versace was born on December 2, 1946 in Reggio Calabria, Italy. In the earlier days, his mother supported the family with her small tailor-shop. There, an eighteen-year-old Gianni learned everything about making clothes and soon he designed apparel himself, which he sold at his mother’s shop. In 1972, at the age of twenty-five, Versace decided to move to Milan and where he worked as a fashion designer. There he acquired additional skills working in fabric procurement positions. The next two years of Versace life were a world wind of ballets and being the head costume designer for them. Mid January, Richard Strauss’s “Salome,” March 31st Bejarts’s “Leda and the Swan” both at the Scala. On April of 87’, Franco Maria Ricci published, the book, “Versace Teatro.” By September Versace’s huge contribution to the theater was awarded with the “Maschera DÌArgento” prize. After receiving the award he traveled to Paris to design stage costumes for Zizi Jeanmaire’s last recital, “Bouffes du Nord.” The people of the “CuttySark” nominated him the most creative and innovative fashion designer for men, on July 8, 1988. Only two months later Versace opens a 600 sqm. Show room in Madrid, his first boutique in Spain. Versace wins the first of a series of awards that would crown his career: “LÌOcchio dÌOro” for the best fashion designer of the 1982/83 Fall/Winter collection for women. In that collection he displayed the famous metal garments, a classic feature in his fashion. At the same time he started another collaboration with the Teatro alla Scala and designed costumes for Richard Strauss’s ballet ”Josephlegende.” Then continues on to create costumes for Gustav Mahler’s ballet “Lieb und Lied,” on October 21. Following, Donizetti’s “Don Pasquale” and “Dyonisos” directed by Maurice Bejart, both held at the Teatro alla Scala. Later that year, Gianni launched his first line of fragrance “Versace lÌHomme.” In Paris, the European presentation of the same fragrance, an art show was organized, bringing together his renowned artistry.
