his story was metaphors. Although there were not many I thought that they were put to good use in describing the places, people and events. Irony is put to effect late in the book when used to describe the Joy of the Court. In reality, no good or joy had come from it. The only thing that the “Joy” produced was sadness for the knight who had to stay in the garden and death for everyone who had challenged it. I think that the author probably wrote this to show the ups and downs of love, and to show how there are things that come across your path in life, such as Erec’s battles, that we need to deal with and move on. In the time period that the book was written it was very common for men to have small battles like this to show off their power or prestige. Sometimes it may have been to impress or protect a woman, other times it may have been to defend your own honor. I think the themes in this story still apply today but in a different sense. Although people now don’t physically fight as much as back then, we have to make similar sacrifices.

The Knight with the Lion is the last story we read in Arthurian romances. It again tells the story of loyalty and adventure. Yvian saves the lion from the fire breathing dragon and the lion remains loyal to him for the rest of the story because of it. Yvian is a kind, generous knight, as most of them are, who encounters many events during his journey such as the fire breathing dragon, the knight at the spring, the demons, and the giant of the mountain. Gawain, the nephew of King Arthur, is his faithful companion for most of the journey. Laudine ends up being Yvian’s wife after he kills her first husband.

I found that this story was the most interesting out of the three in Arthurian Romances. I enjoyed the plot as well as the continued loyalty and friendship the lion showed. I also like the classic enemy that is the fire breathing dragon. I didn’t like how the two great knights Y
