Polonius, in Hamlet, is a minor character whose deceitful ways show the audience that he is one of many characters who lack sincerity and integrity. Throughout Hamlet Polonius is a hypocrite who looks out for his own interests, and betrays those he should be loyal to. These aspects of his character are exposed in his relationships with the King, Ophelia, and Laertes. Polonius is two-faced in his interactions with people. One example of this is his relationship with the King. Polonius was King Hamlet's loyal servant, well liked and trusted by King Hamlet and Prince Hamlet. But his loyalty to Ki...

Hamlet's soliloquy shows how disgusted Hamlet is with Gertrude, Claudius and the world which is shown in the line "How weary, stale, flat and unprofitable, seem to me all the uses of this world"(I,II,133-134). It also reveals to us how saddened he is by his father's death whom he admired and looked up to and Hamlet's mothers marriage to Claudius just adds to Hamlet's grief over his father. Hamlet's soliloquy provides a contrast to the restricted way he must talk to Claudius and the court holding back his true feelings over the situation. In the play by William Shakespeare, Gertrude portrays a Queen who some readers may assume a love and caring mother. However, Gertrude is a shallow mother who only thinks about herself and her loving, unexpected new husband, King Claudius. While reading Hamlet, as the reader focus on one character, the reader can examine why that character is significant in the play. Gertrude is significant to the play in many ways. If she was never put into the play, the reader would lack detail what's going on in the play. Especially toward her son Hamlet. She and Hamlet shared a negative relationship through...

Freud's psychological theory that seems to best apply to the play Hamlet, is Freud's theory of the Oedipal complex. In this, Freud states that a child's sexuality begins at birth, and that the child's first object of desire is the parent of the opposite sex; consequently, there is hostility towards the parent of the same sex, as this person stands in the way of the child's fulfillment of desire. There seems to be a strong sexual tension between Hamlet and his mother, which has led many to believe that she is the object of his desire. I like many see that it is evident that Hamlet's true motiva...

Hamlet In William Shakespeare's Hamlet, the protagonist exhibits a puzzling, duplicitous nature. Hamlet contradicts throughout the play. He supports both the virtues of acting a role and that of being true to one's self. He further supports both of these conflicting endorsements with his actions. This ambiguity is demonstrated by his alleged madness, for he does behave madly, only tome perfectly calm and rational an instant later. He struggles with the issue of revenging his father's death to kill Claudius and backing out, several times. The reason for this is directly related to his inability...

"Crazy" is a word not easily defined. What one person considers abnormal behavior, another might just consider eccentricity. It is difficult to determine when a person has gone from simply acting on impulse and not thinking rationally to truly becoming "mad." This is a subject explored thoroughly in William Shakespeare's play, Hamlet. The plot of the play centers around the supposed madness of its title character, Hamlet, but he is not the only character who displays irrational behavior. Hamlet, Laertes, and Ophelia are all loyal children who exhibit varying degrees of madness after their fath...
