How do I compare Steven King's The Shining book to the 1980 movie? It's for an essay.

Answers:

1. "Many of Stephen King's books have been adapted to film, and for the most part, the original sources and the movie versions are quite different. Literary critics often love Stephen King's novels (not always), but the film versions of his work are usually panned by movie critics (some exceptions are Carrie, Misery, Stand by Me, The Green Mile, and The Shawshank Redemption). An undiscerning moviegoer may not notice—or care to notice—the difference between King's text and its screen interpretation, but diehard fans of his books may roll their eyes at the inconsistencies. Fortunately, The Shining succeeds on both counts—it's a strong work of literary fiction as well as a critically acclaimed film—despite their differences. And as far as I'm concerned, it's a rare case where the movie outshines the source material.

Because The Shining is such a beloved story with a large cult following, there's plenty of information out there to help you write your comparison essay. But where should you begin?...read the book from cover to cover and then watch the movie from the first frame to the last. You cannot properly compare the two versions if you don't understand the presentation of both.

After you've read The Shining and have watched the 1980 film version, you'll notice many differences as well as some obvious similarities. With that information in hand, begin to develop your essay's thesis (for info on writing an essay thesis, see this link: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/545/01/).
