... a bit more straightforward and actively in control, but because of the lawyer's half-blinded ness and kind disposition, Bartleby is painted as a misunderstood, "pallidly neat, pitiably respectable, incurably forlorn- scrivener (9). Symbolically, the paradoxical form of these statements echoes the backwards positions of Bartleby and the lawyer, or the master and his slave. As mentioned, even after Bartleby's death, the lawyer never completely escapes him. However, he does seem rather affected ... by Bartleby's departure, as he concludes the story with "Ah, Bartleby! Ah, humanity!- (34). ...
