Regardless of the brutality Americans used on the Mexicans, their victory of this war resulted in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo; Mexico signed the treaty and agreed to relinquish "all claims to Texas north of Rio Grande and to cede the provinces of New Mexico and California, more than 500,000 square miles of the United States" (317) By 1848 United States had successfully fulfilled their manifest destiny of expanding their nation from "sea to shining sea", but at the cost of the many people and cultures that were destroyed in the process. ...
