I felt that the poem helped me to see sides of some characters that I had never seen before, and it made me think more about Hinton's reasons for molding certain characters the way she did. Throughout The Outsiders, Hinton's own ideas and opinions surface. I got the feeling that it was a very personal novel for Hinton and at the end of the book ... just about everybody.
