Vietnam War

 


             Not only were American troops dying by the hundreds but they were also televising all the killing that was going on. The Vietnam War was the first war that Americans were actually able to watch on their home television. .
             The Vietnamese tactic of fighting was very brutal they stopped at no cost. Troops would be riding down one of the many rivers and look up and see American troops without heads. The Northern Vietnamese were also aware that Americans were seeing all of the killing and destruction on their televisions.
             Back on the home front there was also killing going on. College students were getting killed, along with blacks. Blacks wanted more power. There were many movements for civil rights and people were getting killed just for wanting to be equal. College Students were rallying to create awareness about all the young people that were getting killed. It got so bad at times that Johnson sent the National Guard to try to calm the riots. .
             Back in Vietnam there were warships that were being attacked in the Gulf of Tonkin. This caused the U.S. to send even more troops to Vietnam. The Tonkin Resolution was made so further attacks would be prevented.
             People in the U.S. were getting tired of the War they felt that the money that was being spent on the war which was approximately twenty-billion dollars could be used to help fund American programs. .
             In the election of 1968 Richard Nixon was elected and promised to get out country out of the war. He started the Vietnamization which when we sent our troops to equip and train the South Vietnamese to take over fighting so U.S. troops could come home.
             In 1973 North and South Vietnam came to terms to end the war. The United State agreed to remove their troops. South Vietnam is allowed to hold their own elections. Northern Vietnam agrees to return all Prisoners of war. United States and Soviet Unions relations began improving.
             There were many people killed in this war.
