What Does An "Education For The Mind, The Heart And The Soul" Mean To You?

The standards for entrance into an institution of higher learning should be scholarship, leadership, character, and service. The purpose for attending an institution of higher learning should be to educate the whole person, not just his mind. If you combine the characteristics of standards for entrance into an institution of higher learning and purpose for attending an institution of higher learning you would get a quality person after his tenure at the University. That is what an "Education for the Mind, the Heart and the Soul" means to me. As Abraham Maslow proposed, the driving force of the human personality is to fulfill his potential, or to become self-actualized. .
To educate a person's mind on a basic level would not only mean to teach him a variety of different subjects, but to educate the whole person on an expanded level. This idea would mean to have the student think abstractly and not just dictate what he has memorized from the instructor's mouth, or memorized from a text book. .
The education of a person's heart doesn't necessarily come in a classroom, but within a person's peer group. During adolescence and young adulthood there are many obstacles that may stop a person from achieving their goals. College is no exception when it comes to these obstacles and barriers. Homesickness, grades, and loneliness are just a few barriers that keep a person for being successful. When a person overcomes these obstacles they are free to grow emotionally. If a person grows emotionally then that person is one step closer to becoming a complete person.
A person's soul is a probably the hardest part of the individual to educate. I believe that to educate a person soul that person has to believe in a higher being. A person only has so much control over what happens in his life, so he has to put faith in that higher being to ensure his success. He has to believe that when times get difficult, that his God will help him through the turbulent times.
