With these questions in mind, this researcher investigated the critics" claims. Marshall Mather's three albums include "The Slim Shady Lp," (1999) "The Marshall Mathers Lp," (2000) and also "The Eminem Show."(2002) Each album was individually coded by the following categories; swear words, violence towards police, rebellion against parents and teachers, sexual innuendo, violence in general, group sex, drugs and alcohol use, incest, racial slurs, suicide, homosexual references , violence towards women, and rape. If there was a particular reference to one of these categories in a song, that track got counted in the coding. For example, in "The Marshall Mathers LP," every track contained at least one word which would be considered a swear word. This trend leads to a 100% entry for that particular datum. .
Eminem Slim Shady Lp (20 Tracks) Marshall Mathers Lp (18 tracks) The Eminem Show (19 tracks).
             swears 85% 100% 95%.
             violence/murder of police 5% 6% 11%.
             rebellion against parents/teachers 20% 44% 16%.
             Sexual innuendo 30% 67% 37%.
             murder/violence in general 60% 78% 63%.
             group sex 5% 11% 0%.
             Drugs/Alcohol 70% 78% 37%.
             Incest 0% 11% 0%.
             Racial Slurs 0% 6% 11%.
             Suicide 25% 11% 5%.
             Homosexual Reference 10% 33% 37%.
             Violence towards women 40% 50% 16%.
             Rape 20% 33% 0%.
With this data in mind, GLAAD certainly has a valid argument. Eminem's lyrics in general include profanity, violence, directed at women and in general, glamorization of drug use, and in several cases, casual mention to suicide. The Federal Communications Commission agreed in part with GLAAD, and required each Eminem album to be labeled with a parental advisory sticker. This sticker prohibits retailers from selling the Eminem album to minors (in theory).
The Eminem opposition is still unsatisfied. They understand the limited power of the parental advisory sticker, and are still worried that 35% of his released songs contain images of violence against women, and millions of people listen to, and may be influenced by it.
