" Hamlet continues to demonstrate his grief for his father to the audience, even to the extent of contemplating committing suicide, in Act 3, Scene 2 Hamlet expresses how unfortunate he is by the death of his father and how by ending his life, he would also end the heart-ache he is suffering. The actor that is chosen for this role must be able to consistently show to the audience the emotion and grief felt by Hamlet, due to the death of his father and to also constantly illustrate the other melancholic aspects of his character. .
After the death of his father, Hamlet became a very melancholic young man. Hamlet is always questioning aspects of his life throughout the play. He is continuously expressing his confusion about where his life is going and what the meaning of life is. In Act 4, Scene 4, Lines 33- 35, Hamlet expresses his true confusion about life when he states, "What is man, if he merely spends his life sleeping and eating? No more than a beast?" Also the mere fact that Hamlet is constantly soliloquizing throughout the play also shows that he is constantly in deep thought about his life. Throughout these soliloquies Hamlet shows the audience how depressed and extremely suicidal he is and how he became quite confused about love throughout the play. Hamlet's deep depression was initiated by the unexpected death of his father and the sudden remarriage of his mother, Gertrude, to his uncle, Claudius. Act 1, Scene 2, Lines 150-151 and 159, Hamlet exclaims, "O God! A beast that wants discourse of reason would have mourn"d longer But break, my heart, for I must hold my tongue." These three lines specifically state that it broke Hamlet's heart to see his mother's lack of grief for her husband's death even more so, to then remarry so quickly to his uncle. To then add to this depression, in Act 3 Scene 1, Lines 90- 192, the love of Hamlet's life, Ophelia rejects Hamlet and deceives him by reenacting her rejection to Hamlet in front of her father Polonius and Claudius who Hamlet suspected were hidden out of his sight.
