Evil In Crime and Punishment and Lest Innocent Blood Be Shed

 

The owner of the horse is dissatisfied by the behavior of the horse. Being as drunk as he is, he tells the people in the wagon to beat the horse to death. Raskolnikov and his father see this. Raskolnikov runs to the horse, but his father quickly pulls him off. .
             When he awakens, Raskolnikov finds himself in a sweat. He begins to doubt his ability to kill the old pawnbroker. The next night, Raskolnikov murders the old pawnbroker woman. Unfortunately for him, her stepsister comes home to find the old woman lying dead on the floor. Raskolnikov also kills the stepsister, Lizaveta. During the next few days, Raskolnikov becomes quite ill, almost delirious. He tells Zamiotov, a police officer; that killed the old woman and her stepsister. Zamiotov thinks he is crazy and doesn't believe him. While on his way back to his apartment, Raskolnikov finds Marmeladov has been run over by a horse carriage. Marmeladov dies in Sonia's arms from his massive wounds. .
             Raskolnikov returns home to find his mother and sister in his apartment waiting for him. He tells his sister, Dunia that he refuses to let her marry Luzhin. Raskolnikov decides to go to see Porfiry, the police officer on Raskolnikov case. Porfiry knows that Raskolnikov has committed the murders. He is playing mind games with Raskolnikov. He wants Raskolnikov to confess to the murders. After seeing the police officer, Raskolnikov returns to his apartment and falls deeply asleep. While sleeping, he has this horrible dream where he is repeatedly striking the pawnbroker in the head with the ax. But, she does not die in the dream. Instead she is laughing hysterically at him. Raskolnikov awakens and finds Svidrigailov, Dunia's former employer, standing in the doorway. Raskolnikov when he was younger wanted desperately to be Svidrigailov. Svidrigailov has come to St. Petersburg to stop Dunia from marrying Luzhin and he even offers her money.
