The oppositions to Microsoft are far from a few. They stem from users of Linux and other non-Microsoft operating systems to many companies such as Motorola, IBM, and Hewlet Packard. A page from the Motorola website on computer performance states, "While Linux offers a lower cost solution, users need not compromise system performance. Linux is unmatched in terms of stability, flexibility, and reliability." When it comes to upgrades, Linux outweighs Microsoft line of software. During the upgrade process, the hard drive is reformatted during the installation, which would waste time and system resources. If support is needed, companies such as Red Hat, SuSe, Debian, and many others are major distributors of the Linux software; therefore support is always a few seconds away. According Motorola, the value of Linux is unlike any other. "Commercial distributors like Suse Linux offer hundreds or even thousands of mission critical applications at prices substantially lower than alternative solutions like UNIX and Windows." (Online).
Linux is supported by hundreds of programmers, engineers, and companies that want to fix bugs, enhance the product, and simply add their innovations to a product that could be used by many around the world. At Linuxnewbie.org, Jason Dawe wrote an article titled "Ups and Downs of Linux" which states that, "When a security problem or bug is discovered in Linux it is fixed by others much faster than Microsoft would release a patch. Also unlike Windows, Linux constantly evolves. It is improved on every day. You can get a new release of the Kernel nearly every week." (Online). Another critical advantage of Linux (often not found in Windows) is the security of the system. There are no viruses found in the Linux system, which is the major concern of companies each day. Linuxnewbie.org reports, "With Linux, you don't have to waste valuable system resources and money for a virus scanner Linux is so secure, a virus that attempts to delete a system critical file will receive a permission denied message, the same as if a user without the proper privileges tries to delete one.
