Summary for Abbeys Essay

The essay "The Damnation of A Canyon" author Edward Abbey introduces us to the world of nature, the world of Glen Canyon- one of the most beautiful canyons in the United States and river in this canyon - Colorado River. But there are a lot of problems, associated with the dam: industrialization, changes the life of canyon and what is the main problem discussed by Abbey in his essay.
At the beginning of the essay Abbey describes the canyon and it follows along what kind of connection he had with beautiful part of nature.
Edward Abbey wasn't only the visitor of a canyon, but he was the person who worked there for a long time, and knows a lot about the Glen Canyon. That "damnation".
is caused by the construction of a dam and other industrial objects inside the canyon. He had and opportunity to observe the changes (not improving, by the way) caused by dam and its construction.
The canyon changed a lot since the dam was constructed. Such expression like, "I"m poorly impressed "tells us exactly how the author feels about it. Edward Abbey feels really sorry about canyon, stuffed with equipment, industrial buildings that are not supposed to be there. Yes, it's kind of good," But this "Yes", that's only for people." One thing I want to pay attention to is the sentence "But in this weakness I"m not alone."(144). By that he means that he is not the only , who really worries about the canyon, we can suppose that he talked to lots of people about the canyon, he heard peoples opinions, and he understood he is "not alone". Also we know about transformation of nature, caused by industrial building in a canyon, changes of flora and fauna, etc.:"Crowded out-or drowned and buried under mud." What happened to those all birds? All of them are really great- animals, and all another citizens of canyon, who thought about them? Seems like nobody.
The author is trying to prove, that the canyon if full of different kind of buildings, recreation, industrial, etc.
