Violence in Soccer

A lot of disturbance arose due to the fact that one man had died over such a fight. Due to this fight, the following year the fans weren't allowed to watch the game in the stadium in order to reflect upon their actions. For years now, psychologists, philosophers, sociologists, and anthropologists have been trying to determine what it is that fuels hooligans. Few explanations develop which include: "the .
             need to belong to a group, the desire for adventure, local chauvinism and the rite of youth."(Koning) Men throughout time have fought to prove their manhood/adulthood and it is something that will persist.
             The British have been the most violent globally and for the most amount of time. The English trash every major European city while those European cities don't dare to trash the English cities. Other countries have their problems such as "referees getting shot in Spain, fans stabbed to death in Italy, nail-bombs thrown in Dutch stadiums and neo-Nazis rumbling in Germany(Taylor).
             The authorities are trying to control Hooligans as best as possible. In one case, the fans got so out of control that they were deported back to their countries and others held in large cells that contained hundreds of fans. Many of these fans appeared in court on criminal charges from causing injury to inciting violence, and vandalism. The hooligans are known to throw whatever objects that are easily accessible at passing cars of opposing cities and shop windows or even food. .

             The media is a major key in football. Journalists and television cameras have been present at the games since the 1960's not only to report on the game but the crowd behavior as well. The press is known to exaggerate headings such as "Si, Senor, It's war" in England, days before they played against Argentina. A simple game has become political. It has gone so far that "when Holland defeated Germany , Dutch fans threw their bicycles in the air and shouted that they had gotten their "bikes back" a reference to World War II, when the Nazis confiscated all the bikes in Holland"(Maceri).
