Landfills: Legal, Illegal,Solid Waste

As landfill cells are closed, pipes are installed to vent gases before they can seep into the ground and cause an explosion. Some landfill owners are looking for ways to increase methane gases that can be trapped and used as fuel. .
Reducing waste makes economic sense and saves resources, but controversies over landfills are more likely to focus on where they are built. Biodegradable refuse breaks down extremely slowly in the anaerobic (oxygen-free) conditions of a landfill. Garbage dug up such as hotdogs and pastries that were buried for as much as fifteen years were still recognizable. Many newspapers were readable (in fact, they are used to verify when the waste was buried), and grass clippings were green. .
THE BASIC PARTS OF A LANDFILL .

             • Bottom liner system - separates trash and leachate from groundwater .

             • Cells - where the trash is stored within the landfill .

             • Storm water drainage system - collects rain water that falls on the landfill .

             • Leachate collection system - collects water that has seeped through the landfill and contains contaminating substances .

             • Methane collection system - collects methane gas that is formed during the breakdown of trash .

             • Covering or cap - seals off the top of the landfill .
Each of these parts is designed to address specific problems that are encountered in a landfill. The most precious commodity in a landfill is air space. The amount of space is directly related to the capacity of the landfill. If you can increase the air space then you can extend the usable life. To do this, trash is compacted into areas that contain only one day's trash. Typically the amount of trash within the cell is 2,500 tons and is compressed at 1,500 pounds per cubic yard! This compression is done by heavy equipment (tractors, bulldozers, rollers and graders) that go over the mound of trash several times.
